2013 Calgary Summer Camp

Making a difference for children in need through sports and play Great turnout and fantastic fun makes second Sports Spectacular Summer Camp at Gymtastics Gym Club a huge success.

In July, 2013 more than 100 underprivileged boys and girls had the chance to experience a fun-filled summer sports and games camp, free of charge. For many, it was their very first camp and an opportunity to create some exciting childhood memories.

Through Gymtastics Play-it-Forward Projects, our local non profit organization, we held our second Sports Spectacular Summer Camp from July 2 to 5, welcoming 100 children, from four to 12 years old. More than 35 volunteers, teachers and youth leaders came together to share their skills and enthusiasm to ensure the camp was a success.

Our goal with this camp is to give back to children who may not have the opportunity to participate in organized sports or attend summer camps. For the second consecutive year, thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, volunteers and fundraising efforts, these children were able to experience what many children consider a natural part of summer ? a fun-filled camp filled with sports, games, nutritious meals and new friendships."

The camp is designed to help children who may be facing financial or social barriers to reach their fullest potential, while building self-esteem, self-confidence and acceptance of others. From tug-o-war games, obstacle courses and arts and crafts, to gymnastics instruction on trampolines, bars and the famous foam pit, the children participated in a range of special activities designed to let them grow through sport and play. And topping it off, at the end of the week, the children were recognized with special t-shirts, awards and certificates, as well as a games kit to help them continue playing the games with family and friends long after the camp is over.

Playing it forward is a big part of what this programs advocates. We really aim to leave a positive and sustainable impact on the children so they can continue playing it forward with their family and friends.
